In the now infamous July 25, 2019 phone call with the Ukrainian President Zelenski, President Trump has been consistently accused by democrats of acting to advance his own personal political interests over the national interests. In his defense, renowned Law professor Alan Dershowitz categorically affirmed, “If a president does something which he believes will help him get elected in the public interest, that cannot be the kind of quid pro quo that results in impeachment.”
I have been working in the government arena for almost two decades and have had the opportunity of engaging in political campaigns in several nations. Regardless the general culture of the countries, though, I have never seen anything different: politicians always believe that their personal choices, decisions and actions somehow reflect the public interest; as a result, they make use of those choices, decisions and actions as a way of perpetuating their political legacies.
Stable continuity is a key factor in politics. Scholars anywhere in the world do not see anything wrong with that. Now, how should politicians react when the constituency at large raise their voice and cry out for a readjustment in the power status quo?
As y'all know, I had the honor of experiencing the TX CD11 race as an insider. Now that the race is over, I speak not anymore as a campaign adviser, but once again as an informed political analyst.
The winner has clearly been chosen by the Texas and Washington establishment as the “heir” to D11 seat long before the race even started. Voters on their turn - it was evident everywhere I went - were crying out for a successor.
Public records show that the establishment's choice was supported by over $1 million. And that pile of money, of course, bought unlimited ad time (TV, radio, online, robocalls, paper, etc). AND, the icing on the cake, President Trump's personal endorsement! Although no one can classify that as an unprecedented move in a primary process, it should have raised many more eyebrows than it did, to say the least.
My personal conclusion: in the Trump era, it has been pretty shocking and deeply saddening to watch such a disconnect between the choices top political leaders made in this race and the general expectation of actively engaged voters in the grassroots level.
Now, am I saying that the establishment should be denied the option of picking the candidate they deemed to be the most aligned with their “personal political interests”? Of course not. At the same time, however, they should not be spared of any public scrutiny and even open reprimand for their choice and decision either.
Bottomline is: has the We The People's will, as Thomas Jefferson so clearly laid out and defended, been the only legitimate foundation of government in the now finished TX CD11 race?
In the final number of votes, of course. The "heir" is now on the throne.
In the arena of real representation, well, only the next two years will tell.
