“The Jews took it on themselves to establish the custom that they and their descendants and all strangers who joined them should, without fail, observe these two days every year, in the way prescribed and at the appointed time. These days should be remembered and observed in every generation, by every family, and in every province, and in every city. And these days of Purim should never fail to be celebrated by the Jews - nor should the memory of these days die out among their descendants” (Esther 9:27,28).
Following the 4th of July and September 17th for the second year in a row we pause our lives to celebrate our roots as a Nation, hopefully in the same way the Jewish people remember and celebrate Purim every single year till this present day. To me, this is a powerful spiritual principle that we, Western Christians, so much take for granted.
401 years ago today, a group of God-fearing, freedom-seeking Puritans landed in what is today Plymouth Rock, MA after drifting in the ocean for six weeks. The Pilgrims were originally bound for Virginia to live under the same charter granted to citizens of Jamestown. But God had a different course and a different charter for them.
The Pilgrims had an important question to answer before they left the ship. Since they knew they were not landing within the jurisdiction of the Virginia Company, they had no charter to govern them. What governing document would rule their new society?
In the landmark Mayflower Compact of 1620 they received a divine inspiration: they decided that they would rule themselves based on biblical values and principles. Their attitude set up the American tradition of self-governance that we still enjoy in this present day.
William Bradford, their first governor, wrote: “After long beating at the sea they fell with that land which is called Cape Cod. They fell upon their knees and blessed the God of Heaven, who had brought them over the vast and furious ocean, and delivered them from all the perils and miseries thereof.”
401 years later, at least 12 generations, or around 5,000 ancestors, can be traced after them. According to a general estimate made by the Mayflower Society, each member of the Mayflower alive today has, of course, 2 parents; 4 grandparents; 8 great-grandparents; 16 third great-grandparents; 32 fourth great-grandparents; 64 fifth great-grandparents; 128 sixth great-grandparents; 256 seventh great-grandparents; 512 eighth great-grandparents; 1,024 ninth great-grandparents; 2,048 tenth great-grandparents; 4,096 eleventh great-grandparents; and 8,192 twelfth great-grandparents. In all, there are close to 35 million descendants of the first pilgrims spread around the world today.
So, I invite you to take this moment to praise the Lord and celebrate those faithful and honorable men and women, as well as recognize their godly legacies, which became the roots that transformed America into the freest nation in human history.
Think about their struggles. Think about those who died from famine or disease or hypothermia in that first winter.
At the same time, think about their faith in the Lord and love for each other. Think about the intensity of their joy when they finally saw the land and the freedom they would have to worship and serve their God. Think about their strength of character and the blessings their offspring replicated generation after generation, until it reached us here today. Make this a special moment of reconnection with the God of Generations.

The Mayflower Compact
In the name of God, Amen.
We, whose names are underwritten, the loyal subjects of our dread sovereign lord, King James, by the grace of God, king of Great Britain, France and Ireland, defender of the faith.
Having undertaken - for the glory of God and the advancement of the Christian faith, and honor of our king and country - a voyage to plant the first colony in the Northern parts of Virginia, by these presents we do solemnly and mutually, in the presence of God and one of another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil body politic, for our better ordering and preservation, and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions and offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general good of the Colony unto which we promise all due submission and obedience.
In witness whereof we have hereunder subscribed our names at Cape-Cod, the 11th day of November, in the year of the reign of our sovereign lord, King James, of England, France and Ireland, the eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty-fourth. Anno Dominus 1620.
